Woodbridge Township is the oldest original township in New Jersey.It was settled in 1664 and and granted a charter on June 1, 1669 by King Charles of England. The Township of Woodbridge was incorporated by an Act of the New Jersey Legislature on February 21, 1798.

In the 1800's, Woodbridge Township was gradually divided and portions of the area went to other municipalities such as Rahway, Raritan Township (now Edison Township) and Roosevelt which is now Carteret. . Today Woodbridge Township is still one of the largest in the state with approximately 27 square miles. The population of Woodbridge Township is approximately 100,000. The towns that are part of Woodbridge Township are: Avenel, Colinia, Fords, Hopelawn, Iselin, Keaseby, Menlo Park Terrace, Port Reading, Sewaren, & Woodbridge Proper.

Woodbridge Township has 16 elementary schools serving more than 5,900 students in grades K-5, 5 middle schools with more than 3,000 students in grades 6-8 and 3 high schools serving more than 4,000 students from grades 9-12.
