Edison is 32 square miles and has over 100,000 residents. Edison has over 30 parks and offers Plays In The Park between May and August at Roosevelt Park.
Edison’s claim to fame is that Thomas Alva Edison had his home and laboratory in Menlo Park and many of Edison’s inventions took place in Menlo Park such as the phonograph.
Edison Township was incorporated as Raritan Township by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on March 17, 1870. The township had originally been part of Piscataway and Woodbridge Townships. On March 20, 1900, portions of the township were taken from Metuchen and on March 15, 1905, portions of the township were taken from Highland Park. Based on a referendum of November 2, 1954, Raritan Township was officially changed to Edison township on November 10, 1954.
In Money Magazines “Best Places to Live”, in 2006, Edison was ranked 28th most liveable small city in America. Also, in 2006, in the 13th annual Morgan Quitno survey, Edison was ranked 23rd out of 371 cities of America’s Safest Cities.
Edison has 11 elementary schools, 4 middle schools and 2 high schools. There are many private schools as well. Edison is also home to Middlesex County College a public 2 year Community College located off Woodbridge Avenue and Mill Road.
